jim jordan, demint, we don't have a megaphone or bblly pulpit. there's a band of conservatives in the house opposing the so-called debteal last summer, but the president can command media wherever he goes, and whatever he does becomes news, and we're 435 little voices, and, frankly, the republican conference is not always singing off the same sheet of music. it is stunning to me we're going to go over a fiscal cliff or slope because of eight and a half days of revenue. that's what the president's asking for, eight and a half days worth of borrowing. the other thing to look at, lou, i think, is, you know, the president wants re revenue. he gets that by going over the cliff. he wants less defense spending. he gets that by going off the cliff, and he wants the republican brand damaged which he gets by going over the cliff. what incentive does he have to sit down and negotiate? none. lou: why is the republican party throwing over reagan omics, free enterprise, growth, individual freedom, smaller government, you know, and lower taxes over this? are yo

>> i thought the resignation of senator jim demint, who was a staunch conservative, which was a surprise departure, tells me the republicans in many ways are throwing in the towel on this deal. he's a guy who fought tooth and nail against this thing, against raising tax rates. you may want to work from the outside in, which is the way the press is portraying this. it looks like too many republicans are beginning to throw in the towel. they may finds a compromise that isn't necessarily clinton era tax rates, something in between. but it looks like the makings of a deal. with every change on the republican side, more and more likely to happen than not. >> all right. we'll see about that. we'll be watching. obviously, very, very important for the markets. thanks. see you later. >>> let's get to bertha coombs. one company with big moves after the bell. over to you. >> maria, amarin is falling after the bell. some had suspected them to solicit a bid to buy itself out. it has a drug that's a fish oil drug that's prescription. they say they're hiring a sales staff and they still expect to prese

so perhaps jim demint felt that no one was listening. but as someone who actually believes in service and in the honor of being a united states senator, i don't exactly agree with quitting your term midway after all the people who worked so hard for you, who raised money, who went to the polls to support you. it's going to stay in our seat because the governor of south carolina is a republican, yet i think that jim demint did owe his constituents a little bit more than two years. >> i actually agree with amy on that. and unfortunately, he's getting a lot of comparisons with sarah palin, which can't really be a good thing. >> what about just very, very quickly, because we're almost out of time, amy, hillary clinton, mayor michael bloomberg in new york approached her about running for mayor. she said no. do you think she'll reconsider and should she? >> i hope she will and i hope she'll lift the ban on 16-ounce sodas. we would appreciate that here. and all the bus lanes that apparently taxicabs can't use because of all the traffic. hillary

but jim demint is a movement conservative. so moving to the heritage foundation he'll have to i think compete with the likes of grover norquist for the unelected leader of the republican party, because i think we'll hear from him and see a lot from him. i mean, you know, he may not have always picked candidates, thinking of murdoch and aiken, who won, but i would expect to see him continue to try to push the republican party, you know, as he did on the inside similarly from the outside using, you know, sort of the tools and the levers that the heritage foundation affords. i would just -- i would like to put in a plug for katon. i don't want to worry your chans so i'm going to resist giving my own endorsement, but you would be a wonderful addition inside republican party for voice of reason. >> look at that, katon dawson. take that the governor and see how much it helps you. >> karen just doomed my chances of winning because we don't agree on anything. i'm telling you, i put craig melvin's flame name in first th this morning. >

just into cnn, we have confirmed senator jim demint will step down as of december 31st. he's from south carolina. leading member of the tea party. he'll take over the head of the heritage foundation. cnn's dana bash live on capitol hill with more. why did senator demint decide to step down? >> we're trying to get more information from his aides. maybe find him in the hallways here. it's a bit of a surprise because demint has felt that he's been able to be effective here in congress because he has been kind of a conservative very willing to push his own leadership in ways that often times they don't want to be pushed with regard to deficit reduction, with regard to strict fiscal policy. that's by far his number one issue. i can tell you he's also really angered republican leaders over the past two election cycles by raising millions of dollars, a lot of money, for republican candidates who "establishment" thought were less able to win the general election. he is a purist. he's an anti-tax, anti-government purist. it does seem that he's kind of had it here. he wouldn't be
